Welcome to the Rutgers University Seeing Eye Puppy Raising Club!

Hello everyone,

Thank you for visiting our website! My name is Stephanie Roberts, and I am the president of the Rutgers University Seeing Eye Puppy Raising Club. I first heard about our club on a tour of Rutgers while I was still in high school, and became interested immediately. I have been an active member since the very first week of my freshman year. It has been one of the most important parts of my college experience, helping me to get involved, meet some of my very best friends, and especially to provide an AMAZING community service.

Our club is associated with The Seeing Eye, Inc. in Morristown, NJ. The Seeing Eye, Inc. breeds and trains Labrador Retrievers, Golden Retrievers, German Shepherds, and Lab-Golden Crosses to become guide dogs for the visually impaired. Our puppy raisers receive their dogs when they are about seven weeks old, and raise them for about 15 months. It is a very time-consuming committment, as our raisers are solely responsible for their dog for the duration of its time in puppy development. He or she is responsible for the puppy's complete care, as well as basic obedience training and house manners. With the help of our puppy sitters, vital members of our club, we raise these puppies until they are ready to return to The Seeing Eye for their formal, in-harness training, after which they will be matched with their new owner as a fully trained Seeing Eye dog.

Though raising a puppy is a lot of hard work, it is also a very rewarding experience. Our club has special apartments on Cook Campus where our puppies live with us. They come to classes with us, as well as accompany us to many other events, such as professional sporting events, trips to the mall, and even an afternoon out to the movies! It is a lot of fun to raise a puppy and to always have a furry friend to walk to class with! Possibly the most difficult part of what we do, though, is letting our puppies go when it is time for them to return for their formal training. We love our dogs very much, and it can be hard to say goodbye. However, there is no feeling quite like that of seeing your puppy in harness when he is fully trained before he/she is matched with a visually impaired individual!

If you would like to become involved with our club, or have any questions, please contact us or stop by one of our weekly meetings. We hope to see you there!
