Research Projects

EWB-Rutgers looks offers students the opportunity to work on research projects that relate to appropriate and sustainable technologies. This is for individuals who would rather focus on research and development as opposed to field work - or both.

Our projects often require the development of appropriate and sustainable technologies and the design of systems and solutions that could be implemented in small developing communities worldwide. Selecting an EWB-USA project for a Senior Design class often exposes students to a wide range of real-life engineering situations from concept to implementation. Such exposure matches well the recommendations for general engineering education suggested in the ASCE Body of Knowledge for the 21st Century and by ABET (criteria 3 and 4).

Research project ideas can be found on the EWB-USA Research Projects page:

How to Obtain a Research Project

You must contact This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it if you are interested in a research project. You then have three options:

  1. Propose a project - If you have an idea for a project that you think may relate well to EWB, let us know! We will then work with you, your academic advisor, and EWB-USA to see if we can make it official and then help you to make it happen. Additionally, you can take a research project idea from the EWB-USA page and let us know that you are interested in doing it.

  2. Request a project - You can ask us if we have a research project that can fit your needs. We will first looks towards our active EWB projects to see how you can best fit into our plans. Additionally, an e-board member with knowledge of EWB-USA research project ideas will let you know which idea best matches your focus major.

  3. Work with our research project team - The chapter has not undertaken any research projects. If you would like to help start this aspect of EWB-RU, contact us immediately.

Research Projects for Credit

Rutgers Students may look to work on a research project for credit. This can either be done by a senior design project or independent study. This is something that you must discuss with your Dean and Academic Advisor. In general, deans and advisors of School of Engineering and School of Environmental and Biological Sciences welcome this type of activity as long as it relates to the students' focus of study and a faculty advisor can be found. If you decide to do this, we ask that you also keep in touch with EWB-RU so that we can monitor your progress.

Additionally, there has been talk of a special problems EWB course. This is only a future prospective and is not in effect. The course would most likely focus on sustainable engineering in developing nations. The major boundary is in finding a professor who is willing to teach this course. *Please This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. *A Note to Professors

If your research is related to any of the ideas behind EWB, please let us know. This can be a great opportunity for you to take on truly passionate undergraduate researchers from many different disciplines. We may also be able to help you find additional funding for your research if a member of EWB is on your team.

A Note to Local Chapters

We welcome any invitation for collaboration on research projects. Feel free to let us know if you are interested in collaborating on a research project. We will let our members know of this possible opportunity.
