| At Rutgers University, we are the largest philanthropic organization that requires a substantial amount of technical expertise. Consequently, we look for both expertise and passion. If you have any combination of either one, then you will most likely be great help to our cause. Here's how you can get involved |
- Rutgers Undergraduate Students - The best way to get started is to come to our next general meeting! Simply check this website to see when our next meeting will be, and come to meet fellow students who share a passion in philanthropic sustainable development. The atmosphere is usually light and friendly, yet professional. To become a member, there is a $20.00 annual fee that will also cover your EWB-USA student membership. Once a member, you have the opportunity to work on an international project, local projects, or research projects. We also highly encourage students to attend the regional and international conferences. Although this is optional, we've received nothing but positive feedback regarding these experiences. Browse this website to find out more about these opportunities, and once you are ready, contact the appropriate person and let them know that you are interested!

*Although we encourage membership participation, these are open to anyone! **It is a good idea to also talk with your Dean and Academic advisor. |
We encourage any student who is interested in EWB to speak with your professors about it. Let them know what it is about EWB that interests you. Spread the word!
- Rutgers Graduate Students - Like undergraduate students, you may also participate in any of the projects indicated above. However, please be aware that the Engineering Governing Council only permits us to help fund for costs of undergraduate students. That issue aside, we've found that graduate students (the ones that have time) are in a unique position as the medium between undergraduate and faculty knowledge and experience. The best way for you to get started is by contacting our primary graduate student lead, Ryan Intelgia, at

- Rutgers Faculty - Our chapter is always looking for faculty who are interested in getting involved with EWB. The growth of Engineers Without Borders worldwide is attributed to its immense population in educational institutions. For a student chapter, professors serve as the most direct source for technical assistance and networking. For a student, the opportunity to work with a professor outside of the classroom seems too good to be true. Here are six specifics on how you can get involved:
- Get in touch and join our mailing list! Our international projects are widely diverse and require a large variety of skills and experiences. By reaching us, we can discuss which of your strengths could benefit our cause. It will also act as a means of indicating your interest in our work. Therefore, if in the future we require assistance from someone with your expertise, we will know immediately who we trust to contact. Alternatively, by joining our mailing list, this process works the other way around as well. We will keep you informed of future events, projects, and difficulties, and if you find that you can be much help in one of our projects, you will know how to reach us as well. This type of connection should last years regardless of student graduation.
- Become a faculty mentor! Who says that you have to only focus on technical assistance? As students graduate, a small adjustment period is inevitable. Having a long-term faculty mentor will help to shorten this time and alleviate its difficulties. We work with real communities around the world who rely on our help to better their quality of life. For every minute we spend to get organized is another minute that the community waits for us. Although we are only a student organization, a lot of our work is communicating with professionals, companies, and professors in order to apply for grants and seek funding. Many students find this to be difficult.
- Get involved with a project! Why not, right? Have you always wanted to travel abroad to do philanthropic? Faculty have priority on any project team regardless of experience. Even if you know nothing about the technical aspect, feel free to join students, graduate and undergraduate, and professional engineers as we learn together on how to become more internationally aware through the development of sustainable solutions.
- Become a project lead! The technical aspect of any project is the responsibility of the professional engineer - the primary project lead. However, if a faculty advisor is a professional engineer, or if they have significant experience in the proper field, then they may also become the project lead. This is the ultimate ideal case for any EWB project because it would make everything simpler!
- Incorporate EWB into your research! If your research team has a focus on any topic that can be tied to sustainability and/or developing communities, contact us to discuss how we can collaborate. There are many students in our organization who would love to be a part of research that is somehow connected to a focus that is similar to that of EWB. Additionally, many deans and faculty advisors have agreed to consider giving credit for this type of work through a special problems course or senior design. Integration of EWB into the curriculum is not uncommon.
- Teach a special problems EWB course! Students involved in EWB-RU have expressed interest in courses offered at other universities that revolve around EWB. These are usually courses about sustainable development for developing nations, and sometimes include a design project. It seems that the only obstacle in having this course is in finding a professor who is willing to do this. Contact us if you want to be that professor we're looking for!
Professors are encouraged to talk to their students about EWB. While a professor may speak with any EWB member to get in touch, the official contact for university faculty is Sho Ohata, External Representative (

- Professional Engineers - Having a PE on the project team is essential to the quality and success of the project. Please contact us if you want to work with our chapter on a new or current project either as the project lead or professional adviser. It is not uncommon for multiple professional engineers to work on the same project. Additionally, feel free to approach us with projects that you feel is fitting to our organization even if it is not affiliated with EWB-USA.
- Rutgers Alumni - We urge all Rutgers alumni to join our alumni network. This is a great way to expand our opportunities. As a student organization, we also look to help students make career choices.
- Other EWB Chapters - Our chapter is absolutely open to chapter collaboration. Feel free to approach us for anything - whether you are requesting our help or offering to help us.

). We are willing to find ways to collaborate with organizations that are religiously and politically indifferent.
- Other - If you do not fall into any of the categories above, we're sorry that we cannot accommodate you. However, if our work interests you, we encourage you to browse through EWB-USA to find a chapter that suits you. Feel free to contact us first if you are uncertain.
- All - We encourage everyone to join our mailing list for updates on our recent accomplishments, current updates, and future initiatives. In addition, this website is also a great source for updates and upcoming events. We also encourage anyone who has decided to commit to EWB to attend the Annual International Conference (http://www.ewb-usa.org/). This is a great way to meet everyone involved with EWB and understand what thid organization is truly capable of doing. Lastly, it should be acknowledged that fundraising is usually the most difficult task for a volunteer organization like ours. A great way to help is by donating to our projects. You can find out more about this at our donation page.
