About Us

Engineers Without Borders - USA (EWB-USA) is a non-profit humanitarian organization established to partner with developing communities worldwide in order to improve their quality of life. This partnership involves the implementation of sustainable engineering projects, while involving and training internationally responsible engineers and engineering students.

The activities of EWB-USA range from the construction of sustainable systems that developing communities can own and operate without external assistance, to empowering such communities by enhancing local, technical, managerial, and entrepreneurial skills. These projects are initiated by, and completed with, contributions from the host community working with the project teams.

The Rutgers University Student Chapter (EWB-RU; EWB-USA,RU) was founded by two university students, Dorothy Morallos and Kevin Tevis, in 2005 under the supervision of Dean Donald Brown. Since its inception, the chapter has sent students to Africa, Central America, and Asia in order to work on various projects. Additionally, the organization is at the forefront of the sustainable effort at Rutgers and also contributes to many local and community services.

Students who are involved in EWB-RU have the opportunity to engage in international projects, local projects, and research projects.

  • The international project is the heart of Engineers Without Borders. A team of students will work with university faculty and professional engineers who have volunteered to help in order to assess the needs of a developing community, develop a sustainble solution, and partner with the community to implement the solution. These projects typically require multi-year commitments from our most devoted members.

  • Our local projects are widely attractive throughout the university. The term "local" is used loosely in meaning both domestic and community service. Students who look to volunteer locally may participate in park cleanups, river cleanups, and soup kitchens. The chapter is also well-represented in benefit events such as walks, dances, and concerts. We are also well-known for sending students to New Orleans, LA to aid in reconstruction after the devastation of hurricane katrina. In addition, the chapter looks to collaborate with Rutgers officials in order to "greener" the campus and to provide for a means of educating students about sustainability.

  • Students may look to engage in a research project that is supported by EWB. While it has historically been uncommon at Rutgers, the idea of service learning has been embraced by faculty and administration. Incorporating EWB into the Rutgers curriculum through senior design or special problems is currently taken on a case basis. EWB-RU will look to support students who wish to do this. Additionally, EWB-USA asks students to implement successfully designed research projects.

Engineers Without Borders - USA, Rutgers is a very multidisciplinary organization with a rapid increase in non-engineering majors. This is because the bulk of the work revolves around the health and social aspects of developing communities. Anyone, regardless of experience or expertise, is welcome to attend our general meetings!
