Mission Statement

Arete: The Undergraduate Philosophy Journal of Rutgers University was founded to recognize original philosophical thought at an undergraduate level. Each submission is carefully reviewed by a dedicated team of editors. If your submission is accepted, you will work with our editorial board to prepare your submission for publication.

The Selection Process

Our selection process consists of two phases: first, the editorial board discards those papers unfit for publication (i.e. those papers that make no original contribution); then, viable candidates for publication will be reviewed in further detail by our undergraduate editors and, when appropriate, graduate students and faculty. Based on the recommendations of all involved, a selection of 3-5 of the best submissions will enter the editorial process. At this point in the process, all applicants will be notified of our final decisions.

The Editorial Process

Immediately upon completion of the selection process, a team of editors will be assigned to each accepted submission. Each team will work closely with the author to ensure that the paper meets Arete's publication standards and presents the best possible argument for its position. During this time, authors will be expected to maintain regular correspondence with our editors; those authors who fail to respond in a timely fashion run the risk of losing the opportunity to have their work published.
