The CNN Site Visual Design
Alignment
There is a lot of information contained on this web site, so multiple alignments had to be used to fit all of the information. The page is set up well enough though that the information is easy to follow.
Proximity
Like items are grouped together appropriately. "Breaking News" items are located together at the top-center of the page. "Videos" are grouped together in another part of the page and so on.
Repetition
Elements that repeat are the links section, the CNN logo and the background color. The CNN logo is always located in the top-right corner of the page. You become used to it, because it's their you know your still on the site.
Contrast
The CNN logo/link is red and larger than all other text. This contrast makes it stand out from all other text. The link menu also becomes highlighted when you are on that particular page. The individual sections titles are bold and make them standout, this feature makes it easier for the eye to find them. This improves the scanability.
