Contrast

Both sites do a good job with contrast. Since Evisu’s website has a white background the black as shown in arrow 1 does a good job of standing out. In arrow 2, the use of black and red on the side navigation bar also do a good job of standing out on the white background. On the Stussy site, the black background on the navigation bar does a good job on standing out with the rest of the site. The white text also shows up very clearly on the navigation bar.

There is a representation of hierarchy on the Evisu website. Arrow 2 points at the side navigation bar where the main categories use a red font and the subcategories use a black font to distinguish between the two. The Stussy website on the other hand does only an okay job at representing hierarchy through contrast. While the subcategories do show up on a separate line on the navigation as the main categories, its on the same shade of black as the main categories. It could be better if they used a lighter color to represent the difference and the hierarchy

Repetition

Repetition is a must in visual design since people will need to know that they are still on the same website and also to show consistency on the site. It is also important because navigation is necessary on each and every page of the same website. Both of the screenshots above are from each respective site. The screenshots show the top section of both the Stussy and Evisu website. This top section is repeated on every page to show consistency and to also provide the user with a navigation bar.

Alignment

Alignment is important in web design because a badly aligned website will look like trash and unprofessional. Fortunately, both websites do a good job with alignment. On the Stussy website there is good alignment between the 3 columns and the 2 boxes in each column on the main page. It looks very professional and each box serves a very practical purpose, there are boxes for each gender’s clothing and a box for news and other links. The Evisu website is a little simpler but still has good alignment and everything is broken up well. The top section as shown by arrow 3 serves as both a header and navigation bar and complements the content and the side navigation bar.

Proximity

Proximity allows the user to know if two separate pieces of a certain site are related to each other not. The Evisu website does a good job of showing this on the navigation side where you can see that all the subcategories pointed at by arrow 2 are grouped closely underneath the main category which is pointed at by arrow 1. The Stussy website also shows proximity on their main page with their boxes on the main page. Underneath the box that is labeled men’s is another box that contains each category available. This allows quick and clear navigation for the user and users will easily understand that those categories are for the men’s section.
